Personality disorder symptomatology (PD-Sx) can result in personal distress and impaired interpersonal functioning, even in the absence of a clinical diagnosis, and is frequently comorbid with psychiatric disorders such as substance use, mood, and anxiety disorders; however, they often remain untreated, and are not taken into account in clinical studies. To investigate brain morphological correlates of PD-Sx, we measured subcortical volume and shape, and cortical thickness/surface area, based on structural magnetic resonance images. We investigated 37 subjects who reported PD-Sx exceeding (...) DSM-IV Axis-II screening thresholds, and 35 age, sex, and smoking status-matched control subjects. Subjects reporting PD-Sx were then grouped into symptom-based clusters: N = 20 into Cluster B (reporting Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, or Narcissistic PD-Sx) and N = 28 into Cluster C (reporting Obsessive–Compulsive, Avoidant, or Dependent PD-Sx); N = 11 subjects reported PD-Sx from both clusters, and none reported Cluster A (Paranoid, Schizoid, or Schizotypal) PD-Sx. Compared to control, Cluster C PD-Sx was associated with greater striatal surface area localized to the caudate tail, smaller ventral striatum volumes, and greater cortical thickness in right prefrontal cortex. Both Cluster B and C PD-Sx groups also showed trends toward greater posterior caudate volumes and orbitofrontal surface area anomalies, but these findings did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. The results point to morphological abnormalities that could contribute to Cluster C PD-Sx. In addition, the observations parallel those in substance use disorders, pointing to the importance of considering PD-Sx when interpreting findings in often-comorbid psychiatric disorders. (shrink)

Philosophical discussion tends to converge on the view that narratives are at the center of the emotion of grief. In this article, I expand on this kind of view. On the one hand, I argue that key strands of phenomenological and neuroscientific studies suggest that grief consists in a complex emotional process of disconfirmation-and-updating of the narrative self-model. By heuristically drawing on an analogy between binocular rivalry and grief, I show that certain salient aspects of the phenomenology of grief, such (...) as self-alienation and ambiguity, are straightforwardly reflected by this account. On the other hand, I argue that this hierarchical approach has the resources to: (i) show that both narratable and unnarratable experiences of personal loss are both instances of grief; and (ii) differentiate between narratable and unnarratable experiences of grief, without compromising the view that self-constituting narratives are at the center of the phenomenon. Divided-mind approaches to the conflict involved in self-control are pervasive. According to an influential version of the divided-mind approach, self-control conflict is a dispute between affective reactions and “cold” cognitive processes. I argue that divided-mind approaches are based on problematic bipartite architectural assumptions. Thus views that understand self-control as “control _of_ the self” might be better suited to account for self-control. I subsequently aim to expand on this kind of view. I suggest that self-control conflict involves a rivalry between narrative (...) self-models aimed at reducing error, analogous to model rivalry in binocular rivalry paradigms. This approach straightforwardly accounts for the sense of conflict that is characteristic of self-control within a unified-mind approach, and among its other explanatory advantages, it directly aligns with current views that account for addiction in terms of maladaptive self-representational processes. Advances in genetics may soon make possible the development of ethnic bioweapons that target specific ethnic or racial groups based upon genetic markers. While occasional published reports of such research generate public outrage, little has been written about the ethical distinction (if any) between the development of such weapons and ethnically neutral bioweapons. The purpose of this paper is to launch a debate on the subject of ethnic bioweapons before they become a scientific reality.

The philosophical literature on the ethical treatment of animals is largely divided between two distinct kinds of approaches: (1) the rights-based approach; and (2) the utilitarian approach. A third approach to the debate is possible. The general moral principle “It is wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering” is sufficient to render many human activities involving nonhuman animals morally wrong, provided an appropriate account of unnecessary is developed to give the principle its force. The moral principle can be easily applied (...) to several general areas of human activity: food, research, and entertainment. (shrink)

Does a pharmacist have a right to refuse to fill certain prescriptions? In this paper, I examine cases in which an employee might refuse to do something that is part of his or her job description. I will argue that in some of these cases, an employee does have a right of refusal and in other cases an employee does not. In those cases where the employee does not have a right of refusal, I argue that the refusals are just (...) cause for termination of employment. I argue that there are moral principles that support the different outcomes in the cases under consideration. I turn to pharmacy cases at the end of the paper and argue that they are analogous to cases where an employee does not have a right of refusal and thus fall under the principle that refusing to fill birth control prescriptions constitutes just cause for termination. In "The Logic of Infinity" Poincaré clarifies the notion of "predicative set" and discusses Zermelo's and Russell's approaches to set theory. "The Evolution of Laws" attempts to formulate the question "do laws of nature evolve?" Two papers concern space and time, two others, the electrostatic and quantum theories of matter. This book is of little interest except to those tracing back the neo-scholastic sources of such figures as Maréchal, Coreth, Rahner, et al. The introductory essay by G. Isaye, supposedly designed to give a summary description of Scheurer's method, is a masterpiece of obscure writing even for those acquainted with neoscholastic jargon. The rest of the volume consists of twelve very desultory essays by Scheurer. In these essays Scheurer struggles to pour the philosophy of the ego à la Kant and (...) his successors into scholastic molds. This synthesis is done in the name of the transcendental method, but what results is historically dubious and philosophically tortured. Though ambiguities abound, Scheurer was ahead of most of his scholastic contemporaries in that he tried to come to grips with Kant and to see in Kant someone more than the malin genie of modern philosophy. Unfortunately, the editor does not date Scheurer's essays and one, therefore, cannot determine whether Scheurer first influenced Maréchal or vice-versa--D. J. M. B. (shrink)

The author regards faith as a restless quest for that which can save man from his self-destructive tendencies and allow him to actualize most completely his constructive potentialities. Wieman critically examines several answers to this quest of faith, including those of Dewey, Tillich, and Barth. In contrast he develops the view of "liberal religion," which finds the answer in a divine creativity fostered by communication, and is productive of fresh insights which transform human ideals.--J. Elements of the heritage which survived the estrangement are then elucidated and the author concludes with an eminently reasonable appraisal of the legitimate (...) points of contact and conflict between the two doctrines.--J. Chomsky is widely mentioned in those philosophical circles whose interest centers on the analysis of language, but until now he has really been little read; this new work will remedy that situation. Here Chomsky, building on a presupposed acquaintance with linguistics, provides a stimulating examination of four major areas of linguistic theory: first, generative grammars are studied in their relation to language learning and understanding, then they are further considered as theories of linguistic use and competence; Chomsky here sets out (...) the criteria required for a grammar to be considered adequate—the justification of grammars. The second chapter examines syntactic theory with reference to depth structure and the problem of the relation of syntactic description to the traditional, correct account of how language is used. Depth structures and their import with reference to transformations within grammars are the subject matter of the third chapter. The last section considers, among other problems, the interface between syntax and semantics, especially the problems of degrees of grammaticality. A number of notes which go further into certain topics appear after the main text, and there is a useful bibliography. The main thrust of the book is a syntactical treatment of natural language by using transformational generative grammars as descriptive. Although he suggests empirical tests for the models he has constructed, he does not provide an attempt to fully verify the proposed system. This book will certainly be essential for an understanding of the structure of language viewed from the syntactic point of view.—P. J. M. (shrink)

This monograph is the first really systematic study of the model theory of many-valued logic. The authors develop model theory for systems of logic whose truth-values lie in a compact topological space; the results are analogous to those for two-valued logic—they yield the two valued logics as special cases—but often the methods of proof are more complicated and tend to reveal some of the deep structure of these logics. There is presupposed a fair knowledge of naive set theory and point-set (...) topology, but no knowledge of classical logic is required although it will be of help in seeing the motivation behind various results. The first three chapters are concerned with preliminaries on topology, model theory, and continuous logic. The next chapter examines the relation of elementary equivalence among models, including the downward Skolem-Löwenheim theorem; the fifth chapter contains the generalizations of such classical results as the compactness and upward S-L theorems. The authors specialize their work in the sixth chapter to consider certain particular kinds of models: saturated models, universal models. The last chapter considers classes of models closed under various algebraic operations. There is a bibliography, historical notes, and indices of exercises, symbols, and definitions. This is a collection of papers, all but one of which were previously published, by one of England's leading logicians. Goodstein has described his position in the philosophy of mathematics as that of a "constructive formalist": leaning toward the Hilbert school, but emphasizing the constructive nature of mathematical entities. The papers are more or less technical and symbolic; those most difficult are "The Nature of Mathematics," "The Decision Problem," and "The Definition of Number." Other titles are "Proof by Reductio ad (...) Absurdum," "Logic Paradoxes", "Language and Experience," "The Meaning of Counting," "Mathematical Systems," "The Axiomatic Method," "Pure and Applied Mathematics," and "The Significance of Incompleteness Theorems"; the last-mentioned paper is also quite difficult, but it constitutes not only one of the best semi-formal presentations of Gödel's theorems, but also helps make quite clear what their relevance is to considerations of the expressive power of formal languages in general. This collection constitutes a fine introduction to the philosophy of mathematics.—P. J. M. (shrink)

Novikov is one of Russia's leading logicians and the appearance of this fine textbook is a good indicator of increasing American interest in Soviet logic. The book contains some new material, including a new independence proof of the rule of complete induction from the remaining axioms of first-order arithmetic. The first third of this work consists in chapters on propositional algebra and the propositional calculus. The first-order predicate calculus comes next under discussion: here a number of important classical results—Gödel's incompleteness (...) theorem, the Compactness theorem, Skolem-Löwenheim theorem—are proved rigorously. The author throughout the book leans fairly heavily on model-theoretic techniques, hence knowledge of some algebra, especially elementary field theory, will be useful. The last two chapters are concerned with first order arithmetic and the elements of proof theory. The only shortcoming is the lack of a bibliography and related scholarly apparatus; the student using this text may have difficulty locating material in other publications relevant to that in the book without outside assistance. The translation is very smooth and clear. Altogether, a first-class job.—P. J. M. (shrink)

Although conceived as a textbook, this extraordinary work contains a great deal of material which is either completely new or which has not appeared before in book form. It is intended as an upperlevel text for those with some familiarity with the subject already. After the introduction, there is a long chapter on formal systems which contains new material on algorithms and the theory of definition; epitheory of formal systems is then discussed, followed by an elegant algebraic treatment of logic. (...) Curry then formulates systems for negation and implication in the next two chapters, follows them by quantification theory, and ends with a sketch of modal logic. What distinguishes this from other logic texts which try to cover about the same ground is this: Curry exercises virtually exquisite care in his analysis of some of the more difficult points, variables and substitution, for example, that others often tend to gloss over. Each chapter has a section dealing with supplementary but related topics so as to give the reader some idea where the subject goes. There is an enormous bibliography and hundreds of references, including historical ones; these also increase its scholarly value. The author takes an informal semantical viewpoint about logic—trying to treat meaning as well as form as essential to logic. This view and a pellucid style make things move freely in the most difficult spots; only Curry's occasionally peculiar terminology might be confusing.—P. J. M. (shrink)

The emphasis in this collection is clearly on logic, and this is one reason why it lacks the overall diversity and richness of the 1960 Stanford volume. However, the eight sections do contain much interesting material; in the mathematical logic section Kochen and Specker continue their study of logics appropriate for quantum theory, Vaught presents several new results about the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, and Büchi studies second-order ordinal theory from the viewpoint of automata theory; the section on foundations of mathematical theories (...) contains papers on higher-order logic by Kaplan and Montague, model theory and ultra-products by Keisler, definability in set theory by Lévy. The topic of the justification of formal theories was the essential topic of the philosophy of logic section: an especially interesting paper is that of A. Robinson in which the present state of Hilbertean Formalism is analyzed, and in which the notion of potential truth is formalized. The section on the philosophy of science contains a single paper, by Hesse, on metaphor and explanation; Braithwaite, Hintikka, Jeffrey, and Kyburg contribute to a lively section on probability and induction; the section on methodology in physical science takes as topics the theory of relativity, causality, and irreversibility. The last two sections, on the philosophy of the life sciences, and on history of logic and philosophy of science, contain, respectively, papers by Davidson and Suppes on meaning and concept formation, and essays by Church and Geach on existential import historically considered and intentionality among the medievals. The collection would have been better if more of the contributed papers had been included.—P. J. M. (shrink)

In this textbook on elementary logic the authors present a rigorous treatment of first the propositional, and then the predicate calculi. The first two chapters deal with the former topic exclusively: there is much emphasis on translation of ordinary-language sentences into logic and testing their validity; also a proof notation consisting of nested boxes, similar to the Fitch subproof technique, is introduced and used. The third and fourth chapters are concerned with quantification theory in application to language analysis; the next (...) chapter discusses more theoretical topics including a proof procedure for formulae in prenex normal form and decision procedures for restricted classes of such formulae. Identity is treated next, with the following chapter on definite descriptions. The eighth chapter is more formal in approach and has as its subject the abstract approach to logical systems: the notion of the extension of a theory is introduced at this stage; two examples of formal theories—the theory of commutative ordered fields, and that of real numbers—are presented and come under extensive elaboration. The last chapter discusses variable-binding operations and presents the theory of convergence of series as an example of such a theory with these operations. Each chapter has numerous exercises, and most have historical remarks and lists of theorems of that chapter.—P. J. M. (shrink)

Abraham Robinson has twice been the initiator of trends in the foundations of mathematics which have later become recognized as profound and important, although they were generally ignored at first: metamathematical problems of algebra and non-standard analysis. This book considers the second topic; before we begin analysis—especially a treatment of the classical theorems of calculus—we need basic results from logic, model theory in particular. Robinson then sketches non-standard arithmetic and proceeds to develop the usual properties and relations of differentiability and (...) integrability of functions, convergence; he then examines general topology in this new context and fortified with these results develops "modern" functional analysis in some detail: measure theory and functions of a real variable, functions of a complex variable, normed and linear spaces, topological groups and some harmonic analysis. The last two chapters cover selected topics in analysis drawn principally from applied mathematics and the history of the calculus with special reference to infinitesimals. Robinson views the development of non-standard mathematics as the renaissance of ideas about infinitesimals as serious topics of mathematical study. Robinson primarily has confined himself to analysis and not attempted to cover non-standard algebraic systems; several important results of Alling concerning non-standard arithmetic and rings of continuous functions appeared too late to be included. Of course, the real test of non-standard analysis will come in allowing us to prove new theorems about standard analysis, but although Robinson does not attempt to do this here—although he has obtained results in this direction—other mathematicians have already begun to do so: the future of this new branch of mathematics already looks secure.—P. This is easily the most systematic survey of the foundations of logic and mathematics available today. Although Beth does not cover the development of set theory in great detail, all other aspects of logic are well represented. There are nine chapters which cover, though not in this order, the following: historical background and introduction to the philosophy of mathematics; the existence of mathematical objects as expressed by Logicism, Cantorism, Intuitionism, and Nominalism; informal elementary axiomatics; formalized axiomatics with reference to finitary (...) theory of proof; non-elementary metamathematics, embracing formal syntax and semantics; applications of set theory and topology in metamathematics—especially in the theory of models; recursive function theory; the logical paradoxes; the relation of philosophy of mathematics to general philosophy. This is a mere skeleton of the whole, but it indicates the broad sweep of the work. One unifying feature is the author's use of his "semantic tableau" method of examining the truth or falsity of sentences. Although the author is an Intuitionist, classical metamathematical proof techniques are by no means slighted; they are used throughout much of the book, and are indispensable, of course, when dealing with classical logic. Exercises are scattered throughout and at the end; few of them are trivial. There is a very extensive bibliography, brought up to date from the first edition. This extraordinary book will be of use to logicians as a reference tool and to philosophers trying to survey the field of modern formal logic; its appearance in a fine paper edition is therefore doubly welcome—P. What is attempted in this book is a presentation of various areas of science in such ways that their attendant philosophical problems are displayed, and their philosophical relevance is made evident. Essentially, there are three parts to the book: the first, comprising chapters on the nature of number, geometry, and the mathematical treatments of motion and measurement, presents the usual problems of conventionalism in geometry, physical vs. formal geometry, but also discusses Turing machines and information theory. The next five chapters (...) analyze the laws of motion, probability, chance, and credibility, order in nature, and the conceptual structure of modern physics. The last four chapters constitute a study of evolutionary theory, psychology, ethics, and economic theory, the last topic not often appearing in studies of scientific philosophy. The selection of topics is judicious and balanced, but the author often overuses certain ideas and theories, for example, information theory, as both heuristic devices and as factually true of various situations; in this sense he is misleading and conceptually unrigorous.
